The Virtue of Ignorance

4/7/2021

Dr. Faustus famously said there is no sin except ignorance, but maybe it's the other way round, a virtue. Knowledge makes us culpable: if we have knowledge of good and evil and deliberately choose wrong, it is far worse than acting badly out of ignorance. "If you were blind you would be without sin, but as you say you see, you are guilty." God is not impressed with our knowledge or intelligence, and perhaps if there is an all-powerful being who endows us with our virtues, it would be silly for any of us to get a big head over it, but like charity, ignorance covers a multitude of sins.
